WBCS Prelims Exam Pattern 2022

There will be only one paper for the West Bengal civil service examination’s preliminary examination.
WBCS Preliminary examination consists of only one paper which is about general studies. You have to attempt 200 multiple choice questions in this paper.

WBCS syllabus of the preliminary examination consists of general favourite subjects.
The preliminary examination is the doorway to entering the West Bengal civil service examination’s main examination.
The subjects are from the general categories as English composition, general science, current events of national and international importance, history of India, etc.

WBCS syllabus prelims are like a screening test. You can sit in the main examination only after qualifying in the preliminary examination.
WBCS Prelims syllabus 2022 PDF is meant to serve as a Screening Test only to select candidates for the Main Examination.
The candidate’s marks obtained in this examination will not be considered for final selection.
Only those candidates who will be declared qualified at the Preliminary Examination in a year shall be eligible for admission to the W.B.C.S. (Exe.) etc.(Main) Examination of that year.
WBCS syllabus will include questions covering the following fields of knowledge:
WBCS syllabus of the preliminary examination consists of 08 subjects for 200 marks. I have discussed the subjects clearly in the below paragraphs.
- WBCS English Composition: There will be any 5 questions for this subject, and you have to attend these questions for 25 marks.
- Synonyms and Antonyms: Synonyms are words that have the same or similar meanings. Antonyms are words that have opposite meanings. Here are some examples of synonyms: happy – content, delighted, ecstatic; sad – upset, melancholy, down. And here are some examples of antonyms:
- Idioms and Phrases: An idiom is a phrase where the meaning is not literal. For example, if you say someone is “under the weather,” you don’t mean they are actually underneath the weather. You mean they are not feeling well.
- Vocabulary Test: A vocabulary test is a test that assesses a person’s knowledge of words. This type of test is often given as part of an academic assessment, but can also be given as part of a workplace assessment.
- Phrasal Verbs: There are many different types of phrasal verbs, each with a different meaning. Here are some of the most common phrasal verbs and their meanings: To turn down: to reject or refuse, To break down: to stop working, To pick up: to collect or retrieve.
- Homophones: Homophones are words that are pronounced in the same way as other words but have different meanings, even if they are spelt differently. They can be a source of confusion for writers and can often be misspelt.
- Fill in the qualifying words
- WBCS General Science: This is another important subject in the WBCS syllabus 2022 because these subjects can provide you 25 marks only for 25 questions if you study according to the following syllabus.

- Experience as expected from an educated person not having made special studies of scientific disciplines
- Current Events of National and International Importance: The subject will be an easy part of the examination if you are familiar with current affairs.

- History of India Syllabus: WBCS history syllabus is important for this preliminary examination because there will be 25 marks only for the history part of India.

- Indian National Movement: The Indian National movement is another important subject for the WBCS preliminary examination. This subject will help you to earn extra 25 marks if you can answer on the following matters.

If you want to crack the WBCS exam 2022 on the first attempt then the above subjects are very important for you. Marks that you will get from the above papers would not be added to the final result. But please note that this paper is like the screening test for the main papers.
WBCS Mains Exam Pattern 2022
There are two types of papers in the main examination of WBCS. Six compulsory papers and one optional subject paper.
The compulsory papers are compulsory for all the candidates but the optional paper is only for the candidates who have applied for group A or/and group B.
There will be two papers on the optional subject for 200 marks each. Each paper, Compulsory or Optional, will carry 200 marks and will be of 3 hours duration.
Answers in all the papers of the WBCS main exam syllabus, Compulsory and Optional, except the language papers may be written either in English or in Bengali (unless otherwise directed in these rules or in the question papers).
WBCS Mains Syllabus 2022 PDF
The following papers are the components of the West Bengal Public Service Commission’s Mains syllabus. There will be 6 compulsory papers, 1 optional paper, and one interview after the main examination for the personality test.
MCQ Papers
Out of six compulsory papers, you have to write four papers of the WBCS syllabus on OMR answer sheets.

The subjects of the 1st paper are Letter writing (within 150 words) / Drafting of a Report (within 200 words), Précis Writing, and Composition.
There will be questions on Translation from English to Bengali/ Hindi/ Urdu/ Nepali/ Santali.
Questions for the WBCS 2022 syllabus Santali Paper will be set in Olchiki script and answers should also be written in Olchiki.

You have to do translation from Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali to English.
Note: Candidates shall write their answers to all the questions in only one and the same language in any particular paper of the WBCS syllabus.

Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning

7. WBCS Mains Optional Subjects Syllabus
The two papers of the optional subjects will be of conventional type and the standard of the examination will be approximately that of an Honours Degree Examination as prescribed by the recognized Indian Universities except for Law, Medical Science and Engineering subjects which will be specified for the LLB, MBBS and BE or equivalent courses respectively recognized by Indian Universities / Institutions.
Candidates may use the Devanagari or Bengali Script in the answer papers on Sanskrit, the Devanagari Script in the answer papers on Hindi or Nepali, and the Bengali, Arabic, Persian, and Urdu in the answer papers on the Bengali, Arabic, Persian, and Urdu respectively.
