WBCS Prelims Exam Pattern 2021

WBCS syllabus comes after you are acquiring the knowledge of WBCS exam pattern.

There will be only one paper for the preliminary examination of West Bengal civil service examination.

WBCS Preliminary examination consists of only one paper which is about the general studies. You have to attempt 200 multiple choice questions in this paper.

The best thing about the WBCS syllabus multiple choice questions is that you can choose only one option out of four options.

Total marks for the 200 questions will be 200 and the duration of the examination is 2 hours.

The preliminary examination is the doorway to enter to the main examination of West Bengal civil service examination.

The subjects are from the general categories as English composition, general science, current events of national and international importance, history of India etc.

WBCS Prelims General Studies syllabus

WBCS syllabus prelims is like a screening test. You can seat in the main examination only after qualifying in the preliminary examination.

WBCS Prelims syllabus 2021 PDF is meant to serve as a Screening Test only for the purpose of selection of candidates for the Main Examination.

The marks obtained in this examination by the candidates will not be considered for final selection.

Only those candidates who will be declared qualified at the Preliminary Examination in a year shall be eligible for admission to the W.B.C.S. (Exe.) etc.(Main) Examination of that year.

WBCS syllabus of the preliminary examination consists of total it subjects for 200 marks. I have discussed the subjects clearly in the below paragraphs.

  1. WBCS English Composition: There will be any 5 questions for this subject and you have to attend this questions for 25 marks.

  2. WBCS General Science: This is another important subject of WBCS syllabus because these subjects can provide you 25 marks only for 25 questions if you study according to the following syllabus.
    1. General appreciation
    2. Understanding of science
    3. Matters of everyday observation
    4. Experience as expected from an educated person not having made special studies of scientific disciplines
  3. Current Events of National and International Importance: If you are familiar with the current affairs then the subject will be a easy part of the examination for you.
    1. Significant events affecting India and its relations with the world
  4. History of India Syllabus: WBCS history syllabus is important for this preliminary examination because there will be 25 marks only for the history part of India. You should have the knowledge of of ancient mediaeval and modern history of India.

  5. WBCS Geography Syllabus: This subject will provide you 25 marks you if you can answer 25 questions on the history of India with special reference to West Bengal. The following sub-parts are there in the syllabus.

  6. Indian Polity and Economy: There will be 25 questions regarding Indian constitution. Total marks for 25 questions are 25.

  7. Indian National Movement: The Indian National movement is another important subject for the WBCS preliminary examination. This subject will help you to earn more 25 marks if you can answer on the following matters.

    2. Growth of Nationalism
    3. Attainment of Independence
  8. General Mental Ability: If you have some basic knowledge on the reasoning chapters then you can easily crack this subject. Logical reasoning will test your mental ability and your capacity of taking decisions within short period.

If you want to crack WBCS exam 2021 in the first attempt then the above subjects are are very important for you. Marks which you will get from the the above papers would not be added to the final result. But please note that this paper is like the screening test for the main papers.


WBCS Mains Exam Pattern 2021

There are two types of papers in the main examination of WBCS. Six compulsory papers and one optional paper.

The compulsory papers are compulsory for all the candidates but the optional paper is only for the candidates who have applied for group A or/and group B.

There will be two papers of the optional subject of 200 marks each. Each paper, Compulsory or Optional, will carry 200 marks and will be of 3 hours duration.

Answers in all the papers of WBCS syllabus, Compulsory and Optional, except the language papers may be written either in English or in Bengali (unless otherwise directed in these rules or in the question papers).

The following papers are the components of WBCS mains syllabus. There will be 6 compulsory papers, 1 optional paper and one interview after the main examination.

Out of six compulsory papers you have to write four papers of WBCS syllabus on OMR answer sheets.

The following subjects will be of MCQ.

(i) General Studies- I, (ii) General Studies- II, (iii) The Constitution of India and Indian Economy including role and functions of Reserve Bank of India and (iv) Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning will be of MCQ Type to be answered in OMR answer sheets.

The following papers will be of conventional type written examination.
Paper – I (Bengali/ Hindi/ Urdu/ Nepali/ Santali) and Paper – II (English).

WBCS Mains Paper I syllabus 2021 PDF: Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali

The subjects of the 1st paper are Letter writing (within 150 words) / Drafting of Report (within 200 words), Précis Writing, Composition.

There will be questions on Translation from English to Bengali/ Hindi/ Urdu/ Nepali/ Santali.

Questions for WBCS syllabus Santali Paper will be set in Olchiki script and answers should also be written in Olchiki.

WBCS Mains Paper II syllabus : English

The subjects of the paper 2 English consists Letter writing (within 150 words) / Drafting of Report (within 200 words), Précis Writing, Composition.

You have to do translation from Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali to English.

Note : Candidates shall write their answers to all the questions in only one and the same language in any particular paper of WBCS syllabus.

The subjects under WBCS paper IV syllabus of the mains exam are Science and Scientific & Technological advancement, Environment, General Knowledge and Current Affairs.

WBCS syllabus of this paper includes various aspects and subjects regarding The Constitution of India and Indian Economy.

The Topic ‘Indian Economy including role and functions of the Reserve Bank of India’ of the compulsory paper- V will consist of the following:-

WBCS Mains Paper VI syllabus : Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning

The standard of Arithmetic part of Compulsory Paper – VI(Arithmetic & Test of Reasoning) will be similar to that of the Compulsory Mathematics paper at the Madhyamik Examination of the Board of Secondary Education, West Bengal.

WBCS Mains Optional Subjects syllabus

The two papers of the optional subjects will be of conventional type and the standard of the examination will be approximately that of an Honours Degree Examination as prescribed by the recognized Indian Universities except Law, Medical Science and Engineering subjects which will be that specified for the LLB, MBBS and BE or equivalent courses respectively recognized by Indian Universities / Institutions.

Candidates may use the Devanagari or Bengali Script in the answer papers on Sanskrit, the Devanagari Script in the answer papers on Hindi or Nepali, and the Bengali, Arabic, Persian, Urdu in the answer papers on Bengali, Arabic, Persian and Urdu respectively.

Answers in the following optional papers may also be written in Nepali:
